Recommendation: NPC believes that WWC’s activities are critical to combating poverty and social exclusion

Since its establishment in 1990, WWC has played a critical role in enhancing the well-being of women and their families living in the Donegall Road Village and has proven to be an outstanding model of good practice. Its success is due to the passion and commitment of staff, volunteers and centre users. It has successfully developed safe environment in which women and families of all backgrounds are able to meet, enhance their skills and build their confidence to engage in decision-making processes. This is remarkable given the troubled political and social context.

To date, WWC has received most of its funding from the European Union, but as of 2006 it will be dependent on private funders to continue and grow its work.

WWC is also undertaking a feasibility study to purchase and renovate another local building in order to expand its work. This may require private funding if the results of the feasibility study suggest they should proceed.

Given WWC’s track record of success and reputation as one of Belfast’s most effective community organisations, the risk associated with supporting this charity is low. Not only is WWC well-rooted in its community and able to support individuals, but WWC has sound strategic relationships with other charities, statutory agencies and policy-makers that enables the impact of its actions go beyond the local community.

The Windsor Women’s Centre helps people tackle poverty and disadvantage.
